Alaskan Klee Kai are a dog breed that is naturally high-energy. Because of this, they need lots of daily play and exercise — especially when they are in their puppy stage. In our experience at Kika’s Klee Kai, most separation anxiety is caused by the Klee Kai simply being bored and full of energy. When your Klee Kai hasn’t had much exercise yet that day, they’re likely to get a little squirmy and anxious if you leave them alone in a crate or room. Taking them for a run with you will help them burn all that energy and goes a long way toward preventing separation anxiety. Or, if you’re not into running, you can have them run next to you on a bike, take them to a dog park, have them run around and play, or even have them put some miles in on a treadmill!

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to deal with separation anxiety in your Alaskan Klee Kai is to practice alone time. This doesn’t have to be very long at all. In fact, it can be as short as having them in a room by themselves for 30 seconds or so. Ensure they have something like a Kong with treats or a toy to hold their interest while you are gone and practice leaving them alone for short periods of time. This will help them build up their comfort level while providing a positive experience through treats or toys. It’s also important to switch up the room they are alone in to ensure they don’t associate that room with you leaving. Then, once you return, don’t make a big fuss. All in all, this will ensure your Klee Kai knows you are always going to come back and helps make being alone a more comfortable and positive experience.
