Potty training is one of the most common dreaded parts of getting a new puppy, but with the right training information and tips, it can be a breeze! It is important to know that pottying wherever and whenever is natural to Alaskan Klee Kai and other puppies.

For them to be trained otherwise, they must be old enough to control their urge to go, as well as have some type of motivation for them to want to potty outside rather than inside. Most puppies are ready to begin potty training at around eight and a half weeks old.

Potty Time

Alaskan Klee Kai puppies tend to be extremely adventurous and curious. If you allow them to just roam outside during potty time, they will likely get distracted and forget that they need to go potty. This can lead to them having an accident inside shortly after you bring them back in. Below are a few tips that can help.

Keep Them On A Leash

By keeping them on a leash every time you go outside for potty time, it will help them focus on the task at hand — leading to more success with potty training early on.

Choose a word or phrase such as “go potty” to tell them what behavior or action you are looking for. Using this consistently will lead to them associating it with going potty.

Since young puppies (younger than eight weeks old) do not have the capability of being potty trained, breeders utilize pee pads, artificial grass pads, and other products for easy clean up. However, when you get your Alaskan Klee Kai puppy home, they are old enough to potty train so we do not recommend continuing to use pee pads or other items that encourage your puppy to go potty inside rather than outside, as this will send them mixed signals that may confuse them and hold them back from being fully potty trained.

When accidents do happen inside, it is vital that you simply clean up the mess and move on. By scolding your Alaskan Klee Kai puppy for having an accident inside, you will not help them understand what you want. Instead, they will think that you do not like them going potty at all, which could lead to them hiding from you to relieve themselves and overall just makes them scared of you rather than building trust.

When cleaning up accidents, you will want to use proper cleaning products, such as those from Nature’s Miracle to make sure that you are neutralizing the ammonia in the puppy’s urine. With their keen sense of smell, if this is not neutralized, they will be able to smell out where they went potty inside and may repeat that behavior. On that note, never use ammonia-based cleaners as this could also lead to similar potty training issues.
