Alaskan Klee Kai & Hot Weather

I have frequently been asked how the Alaskan Klee Kai tolerate the heat. Northern breeds, such as the Alaskan Klee Kai have a double coat; an undercoat that is short and soft and an outer coat that is made of longer guard hairs. This double coat allows them to have thermal protection from extreme hot and cold weather.

They adapt to the climate they are in, therefore a dog that lives in a colder climate will generally have a thicker undercoat than a dog that lives in a warmer climate. I have purchased adult dogs from breeders that live in cold climates and notice that when they shed or blow their undercoat it doesn't grow back as thick as it was when they lived in a colder area. They do blow their coats twice a year regardless of where they live.

We are located in Southern California and it can get pretty warm during the summer months. Our dogs don't seem too bothered by the heat and lots of time they prefer lay out in the sun instead of in the shade. They will play in their water bowl or get their feet wet in the pool occasionally. Dogs do not sweat like people do; they cool down by panting and sweating at their paws. You never want to shave an Alaskan Klee Kai unless for medical reasons. They need their coat to keep them cool and to protect their skin.

So can the Alaskan Klee Kai live in warm climates? Absolutely! You just want to make sure they have adequate shelter and water and on days when it is unbearable, keep them inside. For those that love to play in the water, a little plastic pool is awesome!
