The Alaskan Klee Kai as a breed emerged in the 1970s when Linda Spurlin, who lived in Alaska, wanted to develop a companion-sized version of the Alaskan husky. It took some doing but by 1988 they made the Alaskan Klee Kai available to others. Interestingly, it was originally called the Klee Kai, which is Eskimo for “little dog”, but this got changed to “Alaskan Klee Kai” in 1995. Since then the breed has been getting more and more recognition as a distinct breed of its own, separate from the Alaskan husky (though often, and sometimes confusingly, they are referred to as “mini huskies”). The Alaskan Klee Kai was first recognized as a breed in 1997 by the United Kennel Club.
